KS1 English Practice
Reading
KS1 English focuses heavily on decoding and early reading comprehension:
- Applying phonics knowledge (Phase 3-5) to read unfamiliar words
- Reading common exception words by sight
- Understanding texts by answering simple literal and inferential questions
- Reading aloud with appropriate pace and expression
Writing
Children begin to compose sentences and short texts with increasing independence:
- Writing simple sentences using full stops, capital letters and question marks
- Using adjectives, conjunctions (and, but, so, because) and adverbs
- Composing and sequencing sentences to form short narratives
- Correctly forming lower-case and capital letters
Phonics, Spelling & Grammar
Systematic phonics teaching is central to KS1 and culminates in the Phonics Screening Check:
- Applying all Phase 5 grapheme-phoneme correspondences consistently
- Spelling common exception words from the Year 1 and Year 2 word lists
- Understanding word classes: nouns, verbs and adjectives
- Using apostrophes for omission and the basic rules of sentence demarcation
