KS1 English Questions

Primary school children learning in a classroom

Reading

KS1 English focuses heavily on decoding and early reading comprehension:

  • Applying phonics knowledge (Phase 3-5) to read unfamiliar words
  • Reading common exception words by sight
  • Understanding texts by answering simple literal and inferential questions
  • Reading aloud with appropriate pace and expression

Writing

Children begin to compose sentences and short texts with increasing independence:

  • Writing simple sentences using full stops, capital letters and question marks
  • Using adjectives, conjunctions (and, but, so, because) and adverbs
  • Composing and sequencing sentences to form short narratives
  • Correctly forming lower-case and capital letters

Phonics, Spelling & Grammar

Systematic phonics teaching is central to KS1 and culminates in the Phonics Screening Check:

  • Applying all Phase 5 grapheme-phoneme correspondences consistently
  • Spelling common exception words from the Year 1 and Year 2 word lists
  • Understanding word classes: nouns, verbs and adjectives
  • Using apostrophes for omission and the basic rules of sentence demarcation
