Year 2 English Questions
Phonics & Word Reading
Year 2 English builds confident, fluent readers through systematic phonics:
- Applying phonics knowledge across all Phase 5 grapheme-phoneme correspondences
- Reading common exception words on sight
- Reading aloud with growing fluency, accuracy and expression
- Blending sounds to decode unfamiliar words independently
Comprehension
Children develop their ability to understand and respond to what they read:
- Answering literal and simple inferential questions about a text
- Discussing events, characters and language choices with a teacher or partner
- Making predictions based on what has been read
- Listening to and talking about a wide range of stories, poems and non-fiction
Writing, Spelling & Grammar
Year 2 writers begin composing their own sentences and short texts:
- Writing simple and compound sentences using full stops, capital letters and question marks
- Spelling words from the Year 1/Year 2 statutory spelling list
- Joining words and clauses using and, but, because and so
- Forming letters correctly with consistent size and spacing
