Grammar

Year 2 GPS work develops grammatical knowledge that supports both reading and writing:

• Apostrophes for simple omissions (e.g. don't, can't)
• Using commas to separate clauses and items in a list
• Editing for punctuation as part of the drafting and revising process

Spelling

Systematic spelling teaching in primary school builds lifelong accuracy:

• Learning all statutory spellings from the Year 1/2 word lists
• Applying morphological knowledge: prefixes and suffixes to build new words
• Identifying and learning common homophones (e.g. there/their/they're)
• Using a dictionary and thesaurus to extend and verify vocabulary choices
