Year 2 Maths Practice
Number & Place Value
Year 2 maths builds strong number sense as the foundation for all future learning:
- Recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens and ones)
- Read, write and order numbers using numerals and words
- Use the = sign, and understand > and < symbols to compare numbers
- Understand and apply number bonds to 10 and 20
Addition & Subtraction
Fluency with addition and subtraction underpins all other areas of maths in KS1:
- Add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers
- Solve one-step and two-step problems using concrete objects and pictures
- Recall number facts and check calculations using the inverse operation
- Apply understanding of odd and even numbers
Multiplication, Fractions & Measures
Year 2 introduces new concepts that prepare children for the demands of KS2:
- Count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10; introduction to times tables
- Recognise, find and name fractions: 1/2, 1/4, 1/3
- Measure and compare lengths, mass and capacity using standard units
- Tell the time and solve simple problems involving time intervals
